FOUNDER / CEO
YBM LEADERSHIP ALLIANCE
John Martin is the CEO and Founder of the YBM Leadership Alliance, a non-profit organization focusing on leadership development, college preparation, and career readiness for young black men. YBM Leadership Alliance’s vision is to create a new reality by developing a generation of future leaders.
Inspired by his guidance counselor’s comment in his senior year of high school that he was not “college material” and, many years later, a vision from God during a Get Motivated conference, John was led in 2006 to start the organization that is now known as YBM Leadership Alliance.
The first event hosted by YBM, a leadership conference at University Park Baptist Church in 2007, was a tremendous success with over 300 young black men and parents in attendance. Over the years John has gathered a team of passionate, like-minded professionals to help refine and execute the vision of Creating A New Reality by developing future generations of leaders. Some of the accomplishments to date include that YBM has impacted over 10,000 people worldwide, as well as the following Academic and Global Impact:
- 100% High School Graduation
- 100% College Attendance
- 97% On Track to Graduation from College
- 70% Engage in Leadership Activities on College Campus
- $25,000 Scholarships Awarded by YBM
- 2000 Shoes Provided to Children in Haiti
- 1680 Meals Provided to Haitian Orphans
- 1800 Meals Provided to Homeless NC Citizens
- 600 Hours of Reading with At-Risk Elementary School Students
- 2000 Volunteer Service Hours Provided by YBM Ambassadors
In addition to his work as CEO and Founder of YBM, John is a member of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School African American Males Task Force, the Male Leadership Academy Board, Central Piedmont Community College Minority Male Mentoring Advisory Board, Vance Academy of Engineering, and the SAME Academy Board.
John’s professional career has spanned more than 20 years in the Telecommunications, Information Technology, and Software Development industries. He has served in a variety of leadership positions at Hewlett-Packard, Agilent Technologies, and JDS Uniphase where he managed multi-million dollar cross-functional international programs and projects. John has also taught advanced project management at the Keller Graduate School of Management.
Recognized as a community leader, and his tireless service amongst youth, his community, and visions of hope, John was awarded the Charlotte Bobcats and Wells Fargo Community All Star award in March 2013. In 2015, he has been awarded the following honors:
