2016 YBM MLK Day of Service Project
(Charlotte, NC – January 18, 2016) –YBM Leadership Alliance made over 1200 sandwiches and 1,000 care packages for ‘Operation Sandwich’ today in the spirit of service for Martin Luther King Day. Operation Sandwich is a community-based effort to educate the community on homelessness which supports Urban Ministry Center’s mission of bringing the community together to end homelessness, one life at a time. Care packages included sandwiches, animal crackers, trail mix boxes and most importantly, a note of encouragement and love drawn by the children and written by the parents.
The care packages were put together at Irwin Academic Center and transported to Urban Ministries. Upon delivery of the 1,000 care packages, Ms. Sandra Smith, Soup Kitchen Director, said that ‘it was the most donated food she had seen… it is 3 days worth of meals and the neighbors will really enjoy the notes to know that someone in the community cares about them!’
Participants in Operation Sandwich included YBM Leadership Alliance Scholars and Ambassadors, the South Charlotte chapter of Jack and Jill, Be There Dad, students and men of Irwin and many others that showed up to help.
