YBM Leadership Alliance Third Grade Reading Program
Reading To Create New Leaders

Charlotte, NC – The YBM Leadership Alliance, a non-profit organization for young black men in Charlotte North Carolina is proud to announce the Third Grade Reading Program. The primary objective of the 3rd Grade Reading Program is to increase the leadership skills and civic engagement of high school students, while providing a literacy and mentoring program designed to increase the proficiency and learning capability of low performing third grade students. High achieving high school students from YBM Leadership Alliance serve as mentors to third grade students. Pamela Lue-Hing, a mother and advocate of young black men, has a son who is a graduate of YBM Leadership Alliance and they both so believed in the program, that she has remained a volunteer. Currently, as part of the YBM Executive Leadership Team, Lue-Hing serves as the Director of the YBM Third Grade Reading Program.

The reasoning and development of this reading program is clear. By pairing a high performing high school student with a low performing third grade student, you create a role model for that third grade student which in turn promotes success in academics, leadership in the community and confidence in a child who greatly needs it. Confidence and academic success are critically important factors in creating strong future leaders. The National Research Council has concluded that students who are not at least a modestly skilled reader by third grade are unlikely to graduate from high school. The young men from YBM Leadership Alliance are acting as a force in changing this disheartening fact.

As these high school students prepare for high school graduation, this program provides a valuable vehicle to help these young men embrace leadership roles. YBM students must apply to become a mentor of the Third Grade Reading Program. Required qualifications of applicants include a GPA of 3.0 or higher, the ability to demonstrate leadership skills, the capacity to have a great passion to give back to others, attending mentor training sessions, commitment to attend monthly leadership development training, and remaining committed to the Third Grade Reading Program for the duration of the four month sessions.

The Third Grade Reading Program began during the 2012-2013 School Year and currently serves John Motley Morehead STEM Academy, Reedy Creek Elementary, and The Male Leadership Academy. Participants meet once a week for 45 minutes to an hour until the reading assignment is complete. During each mentoring session, the mentor asks the mentee questions based upon the Common Core State and national mandated standards that encourage reading comprehension.

John Martin, who has a vision to Create A New Reality by developing generations of future leaders, founded YBM Leadership Alliance in 2006.
