Summary: The Academic Advisor assists Top Scholars students in their growth and development by developing meaningful educational plans which are compatible with their life goals. The Academic advisors exist to assist students to explore academic, career and personal goals.

Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Facilitate (4) educational guidance workshops that address: schedule planning, coursework recommendations, and academic/career goal-setting and preparation
  • Assist students in building a plan consistent with their abilities and interests
  • Create and maintain an up-to-date Advising Portfolio, with a summary record of performance to date (grade reports, transcript, requirements completed, etc.)
  • Inform and, if necessary, refer students to other institutional resources when academic, challenges require intervention by other professionals. (e.g., Office of Academic Development, Academic Services, etc.)
  • Will provide status updates monthly to the ED


  • Must be available to facilitate workshops scheduled on Saturdays
  • Associates Degree, 2- 4 years professional experience with training and development, workshop facilitation, teaching or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate and interact with across multiple generations
  • Must be a creative problem solver that is solutions oriented, focused and attentive to participant needs
  • Strong classroom and facilitation skills
  • Ability and willingness to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing needs and expectations
  • Must be able to deal with sensitive information and maintain its confidentiality
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet deadlines
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills
  • Background check and drug screen required to interact with youth

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of content development, and learning techniques and theory
  • Excellent written and verbal communication with the ability to communication all levels of employees
  • Coaching and counseling skills including the ability to give positive and constructive feedback
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Knowledge, Skills and Other Abilities:

  • Knowledge of principles and practices related to youth development
  • Strong facilitation, interpersonal, and presentation skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse community
  • Must be able to maintain complete confidentiality
  • Organized with marked attention to detail with excellent follow through
  • Capable to handle challenging situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Committed to the development of young people and the mission of YBLA
